Configuring a Magento Environment for Development

A vanilla Magento install is not conducive to development; there are a few configurations that should be made in order to make your life as a Magento developer much easier. Why make it harder on yourself?

  • Disable all site caches under System » Cache Management
  • Enable system logging under System » Configuration » Advanced » Developer » Log Settings
  • Turn on PHP error reporting. The quickest way to do this is to uncomment this line found in index.php: #ini_set('display_errors', 1);
  • Enable the Magento error page by renaming errors/local.xml.sample to errors/local.xml
